The Mineral County Sheriff’s Department is now accepting applications for the position of a civil service Deputy Sheriff. Starting Salary for officers is $ 48,080.00 with benefits, $ 50,080.00 with benefits if or once officer is West Virginia certified. Any person who is a West Virginia certified law enforcement officer at the time of hiring would be eligible for a $5,000 one-time sign on incentive, payable upon the successful completion of the one-year probationary period. Applications may be picked up at the Mineral County Clerk’s Office at 150 Armstrong Street, Keyser, WV. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., phone 304-788-3924. Applications must be returned to the County Clerk’s Office by 4:30 pm, Thursday, October 31, 2024.
We also request that applicants submit a resume which includes references with their application as well as a copy of your valid driver license, copy of military discharge, and copies of certificates and trainings.
After submitting the application, you will be notified by mail of the Civil Service testing date and location.
Applicants will be expected to pass a pre-employment physical ability examination the same day as the written exam.

Job Description
Duties include but are not limited to: Making preliminary investigations of criminal offenses; completing necessary paperwork as required by Sheriff’s Department policy and/or State law; be capable of effectively making arrests; apprehending and transporting mentally disturbed persons; transport of prisoners to and from jail; conduct search warrants; serve civil papers when necessary; investigate traffic crashes and all other duties required by West Virginia Code or the Department Policy.
Minimum Requirements
All applicants must be able to meet the minimum requirements for physical agility as determined by the West Virginia State Division of Criminal Services.
-Education- Applicants must be a high school graduate or must have obtained a GED or equivalent.
-Applicants must take and pass the prescribed civil service examination at entrance level, with a minimum score of 60%.
-Experience -No law enforcement experience is required; however, preference may be given to certified law enforcement officers and/or applicants with prior military experience.
Special Job Qualifications
- Good physical condition - physical exam required prior to appointment.
- Must pass a physical agility test prior to appointment. The mandatory PAT will be the required test for entry-level applicants for the academy.
- Vision: 20-20 corrected in each eye required
- Hearing: No deficiency allowed
- Valid driver’s license required
- U.S. citizenship required
- Age requirement: 18 years of age
- Non- certified officers will be required to complete a 16-week para-military style training academy.
Special Note:
The Civil Service Commission may refuse to examine any applicant, or after examination, may refuse to certify an eligible one who is addicted to the habitual use of intoxicating liquors or drugs; or who has been convicted of a felony or who has been guilty of infamous or notoriously, disgraceful conduct; or who has been dismissed from public service for delinquency or misconduct; or who has made false statement of any material fact, practiced or attempted to practice any deception or fraud in his application in any such examination or in securing his eligibility; or who has consumed and/or illegally possessed a narcotic. An extensive background check will be conducted on any applicant prior to hiring.
Successful candidates will be required to submit to a polygraph and psychological exanimation prior to hire.
